The Daily Californian’s arts and entertainment department discusses the Oscars

Who do I think is going to win best picture? Probably La La Land. I personally want La La Land to win. And I think it should win. But I will not be mad if Moonlight takes home the award. I am super team Moonlight, I think Moonlight should win. I just think that Moonlight is a film that took risks and I think that certain type of risk taken should be rewarded. Really felt like the first time we saw a film that, like was that open about sexuality, that open about race in America, but also like really sympathetic towards–and empathetic–and that’s like something that Cinema rarely gets on the big screen. I really want to see Moonlight pull off best picture win. I really loved the movie 20th Century Women, directed and written by Mike Mills. It was just this sublime story about these powerful women raising this young boy. I personally would have loved to see like Swiss Army Man or even Rogue One or maybe the Handmaiden get an original score nomination. You know I’m actually in the camp that there wasn’t a huge snub this year. Many people think it does but I think pretty much everything Hacksaw Ridge related should not be there. Mel Gibson. Passengers should not be nominated for anything, like the only thing that passengers should be nominated for is best movie that should be retitled Stockholm Syndrome. I think the Oscars in terms of nominations got it mostly right this year, which is surprising because the past two years they’ve missed out on quite a few things. But overall the slate, the landscape of the nominations, in terms of representation of both people of color and interestingly enough the middle america perspective with Hell or High Water is really awesome and great that all these different films are getting nominated.
