New Leader Series 1: Dealing with Overwhelm

– People are demanding
everything from you. They’re coming from above,
they’re coming from the side, they’re coming from below. It is so hard to manage everything without feeling completely overwhelmed. Hey everybody, Jenny B here. I’m starting a new leader series. This is basically a list of things for new leaders not to do. I get asked by clients all the time to help support their new leaders. And so I’m doing a list
of 10 new leader no-nos. Basically things for
new leaders to not do. Are you ready? Here we go. Let’s talk about overwhelm. As a new leader, there are so many things to pay attention to, that you’ve never had to pay attention to before. People are demanding everything from you. They’re coming from above,
they’re coming from the side, they’re coming from below. It is so hard to manage everything without feeling completely overwhelmed. Here’s my tip for you. Here’s what I’m gonna ask you to do. When this happens, when this feeling occurs
for you, remember this: You don’t have to be all
things for all people. What people really need
from you is to be heard. They just need to be validated, okay? So if you feel like you’re gonna have to fix
everything for everyone, you’re gonna get totally overwhelmed. You don’t have to fix everything, you don’t have to change everything. But what you do have to
do, always and forever, is be a great listener. Sit down with them, listen
to what they’re saying, validate what they’re experiencing, and let them know that you are on it, that you are looking into it. Thank them for sharing. Mostly, people just need
to know that you hear them. That’s it! That’s what you gotta do if
you’re feeling overwhelmed. Now that you know, it’s
time to learn and grow. Here we go.
