Judge rules against Johnson & Johnson in historic opioid lawsuit

CONNELL: ADAM, WE HAVE BREAKING NEWS NOW. GO AHEAD, KRISTINA. KRISTINA: AN OKLAHOMA JUDGE DELIVERING HIS RULING IN THE STATE’S MULTIBILLION-DOLLAR LAWSUIT, WORTH ABOUT $17 BILLION AGAINST JOHNSON & JOHNSON. GRADY TRIMBLE HAS THE VERDICT. REPORTER: THE LAWSUIT WAS SEEKING $17 BILLION IN DAMAGES. THE JUDGE’S RULING WAS NOT ANYWHERE NEAR THAT, HE AWARDED $572 MILLION TO THE STATE. BASED ON EVIDENCE OVER THE EIGHT-WEEK TRIAL, THAT IS WHAT HE IS ABLE TO GIVE TO HELP ABATE THE OPIOID PROBLEM, SPECIFICALLY IN THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA. NOW THE STATE HAD CLAIMED THAT THE COMPANY WAS A PUBLIC NUISANCE AND THAT IT USED AGGRESSIVE MARKETING THAT DOWNPLAYED THE RISK OF OPIOIDS AND FLOODED THE MARKET WITH THESE PAINKILLERS. IT EVEN CALLED JOHNSON & JOHNSON AN OPIOID KINGPIN. THE COMPANY DENIED WRONGDOING BUT OBVIOUSLY WITH THIS RULING YOU CAN SEE THAT THE JUDGE WANTS TO DO SOMETHING. HE DID FINE THEY ARE LIABLE BUT HE JUST DIDN’T OFFER THE RULING THAT THE STATE WAS HOPING FOR. SO THIS DOES SET A PRECEDENT BECAUSE TWO OTHER DRUG COMPANIES SETTLED WITH THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA FOR FAR UNDER$500 MILLION. SO IT IS STILL A LOT OF MONEY THAT WILL GO A LONG WAY CURBING THE EPIDEMIC IF IT IS USED LIKE THE STATE HAS SAID, FOR DRUG TREATMENT PROGRAMS AND ADDICTION PREVENTION TYPE PROGRAMS BUT IT IS NOWHERE NEAR THE 17 BILLION THEY WERE HOPING FOR, BUT THERE ARE STILL LOTS OF LAWSUITS IN LIMBO RIGHT NOW. THEY ARE PENDING AND THEY’RE BEFORE A FEDERAL JUDGE, 20:00 OF THEM. THAT JUDGE IS ENCOURAGE EACH OF THE LAWSUITS TO SETTLE. LOOKED LIKE THIS THEY MIGHT PRESS THEIR LUCK TO GET A HIGHER NUMBER WITH A TRIAL. THERE ARE A LOT OF LEGAL COSTS THAT GO ALONG WITH IT. WHETHER IT IS WORTH IT IN THE

  1. A few people died from misusing something and now it's an epidemic? Lol

  2. We should also punish the doctors for being the drug pushers

  3. jennifer braceras is a dummy dum

  4. What about the Doctors that prescribed these drugs?????

  5. How many mass shooters were on opioids list look at that

  6. 500 million is a slap on the wrist for the problems they caused and the money they made doing it

  7. So did any pharma execs go to prison for their crimes? 🤔

  8. Dave Chapelle was right 😂😂😂 it's not a problem till it hit the other side of the tracks.

  9. Johnson & Johnson just seems like a shady company

  10. That guy sounds like dr Phil.

  11. A billionaire somewhere just got a little richer, and Johnson and Johnson just had to break open a piggy bank

  12. Now let's hold them accountable for vaccination injuries!!!

  13. No one forced these people to take these meds. I know a couple druggies hooked on them but they said it took to long to take affect so he crushes them and snots them

  14. Jennifer is a tool.

  15. That's not even a drop in the bucket for J&J

  16. I knew it! To get rich these shady characters in government are falsely accusing drug companies for illegal fentanyl and heroin use! So many legitimate pain patients are now suffering who never sold or gave away any of their medicine! This includes cancer and other terminal patients and our military veterans!!!! This is criminal!

  17. This lady thinks treating people that sell cheeseburgers is the same as "big pharma" companies killing people and for anyone that uses there head clearly you can see that there's no resemblance lol like people"Od" off of cheeseburgers everyday what a joke

  18. 572 mil?! Not even close to enough! Considering they made multiple billions, maybe trillions ruining America……yet another laughable slap on the hand. They should have to pay the govt back! Medicaid pays for drug treatment!

  19. The war on drugs is the silliest crap EVER. I have friends that were addicted to pain killers and switch to heroin because it's cheaper and that's how they overdose.

  20. So now we sue the gun manufacturers

  21. And you wonder why American businesses go to China…ridiculous lawsuits!!

  22. Fentanyl is the worst drug! It's the only opioid that narcan cannot reverse an overdose.

  23. The US government is mostly responsible.

  24. The people who made money from the opioid crisis and looked the other way as the public became addicted……those are the people to blame for this crisis.

  25. Johnson and Johnson does sound like drug dealer . Lol all that baby powder

  26. Why are they not fining the doctors?

  27. This was a very bad decision. It's the same as gun makers being responsible for the guns they manufacture, not the user.

  28. Each day I'm losing more and more faith in humanity and the U.S government. J&J is a drug company. That's what they do. They can't govern the product once it's in pharmacies. That's the FDA's and doctors responsibilities. Unless J&J are paying or giving doctors commissions to write bogus prescriptions, I don't see the validity in this case.

  29. Drugs are bad mmmkay….👨‍⚕️

  30. Mexico has had banned opioid medication for years and guess what there's tons of heroin, and many needless suffering! When are we going to start taking responsibility for our own actions and lives! Anyone alive in the last 100 years knows your body become physically dependant on opiates but also so are antidepressants, heart medication, insulin, and we do not have to take any medicines we don't want to! Please keep the government out of the doctors offices!

  31. Consumers will pay for it

  32. McDonald's and the like SHOULD be sued for obesity-related diseases; they prey on the uniformed and low-income people.

  33. FDA, approved, first, how about that money? Money suing money!
    It will happen again.

  34. I am an alcoholic, but its no fault of my own, it was the people that made the product, can I sue? Sarcasm

  35. Great… now the price of my Band Aids and Pepcid AC is going to skyrocket.

  36. Shows the Pharmaceutical companies for what they are. Monsters.

  37. in a rare instance of additional enlightenment, jk, i was not previously aware how vast the problem and its polluted components were and are. that stated, i was aware of the dishonest disgraced democrat press mocking the presidents priorities, spending weeks manufacturing the more important threats that they were never in position to educate or opine on, which did turn out as traditional leftist media being wrong again six ways to sunday never any shock. now the post and others have since run rampant with it, as it can apply to their 'rich people getting punished' mantra, but they are sure as hell not going to mention the victims or the president. this is their turf now. lol

  38. So now my drug habit is cause some one makes it.Who do you sue for a low IQ

  39. The CEO should be sent to prison,. They are serial killers. Vicious greedy murderers.

  40. People don't like pain. I've seen many in need who can't even get them legally. Good going , Jennifer. Accountable? Once again, it's not going to cost J&J a dime. Their customers, yes…Their shareholders,?.

  41. , PUT THEM OUT OF BUSINESS:: THAT WILL MAKE ROOM FOR 1000 NEW BUSINESS. JOHNSON AND JOHNSON IS NOT A SEXY COMPANY

  42. When I go to the dentist for oral surgery or pain issues, they want to give me Tylenol 3 or some other weak crap drug that does nothing for pain because a few in our society can't keep from abusing drugs. Don't punish the whole of society for a few in society.

  43. Should been billions.. that little money judge ordered was just enough to cover the attorneys fees.

  44. I‘m not American and I don‘t really care about what they did 😂I just care about if their share is going up or down so I can make money

  45. The 500million will never be used for addicts treatment, more likely pocket lining before its used to help addicts, oklahoma hopes they just overdose, saving the state 500million to make meth!

  46. The doctors created the drug addiction…… now when you have an injury it’s an aspirin.

    Enjoy your pain

  47. Only one company made oc when other companys started generics the government stopped them and we got op. Oxy polymer 😁

  48. The price of Q tips has gone through the roof..

  49. The problem is that no one but the person taking the pills pushed them down their throat so with that being said the real person to blame is the one taking the pills not the one making them

  50. Labels!!! people do what their doctor recommends… CORRUPTION ALL THE WAY! What Jerk you are Christina… really?

  51. My doctor says i got the butt cancer because mom used J&J baby powder when i was a baby- see you in court J&J you will pay dam you.

  52. The same judge also ruled, in a separate case, that the manufacturer of FORKS, SPOONS AND KNIVES can be held accountable for the obesity epidemic!

  53. The reason for the opioid crisis is Chinese fentanyl. The idea that aggressive pain control is the reason for addiction and mortality has not been proven. About 2,300,000 people die each year in the US each year from all causes. That is 6,300 a day. Most will need opiate pain control at some point. How many who die while being treated are counted? Simply saying 30 die each day gives no useful information. It is only an emotional talking point. It is used to shake down those with big pockets. Government is the corrupt party here. Pain control will save many more lives from suicide than are lost by addiction caused by aggressive pain control.

  54. This is bs. Opioid abuse is on the abusers in fact government regulations are making it difficult if not impossible for people who need these drugs to get them.

  55. If an overseas terrorist organization was responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans, their members would be hunted down and eliminated. When a domestic corporation acted as a profit driven serial killer and was responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans, their members are not eliminated, incarcerated or even put out of business. That is terrible. American lives matter!

  56. It tells you that the FDA was a willing participate and should be investigated and top decision makers should be held acountable also, every single alphabet organisation across our land are corrupt decision makers

  57. About time someone holds these dope dealers accountable

  58. Too bad only lawyers will see any of this money

  59. LISTEN TO THESE STUPID FEMALES,,,,,IF ALL WAS WELL THEN THE COURT WOULD NOT HAVE AWARDED THE CITY,,,,,700+ MILLION DOLLARS,,,,,,,,THESE TWO FEMALES NEED TO JUST SHUT UP,,,,,,THEIR IGNORANCE IS ONLY RIVALED BY THEIR ARROGANCE…..

  60. Seriously!!?? Comparing Johnson & Johnson pushing this drugs to fast food is like comparing a drug dealer selling meth and heroin on the street to a kid with a lemonade stand.

  61. GMO is most responsible for obesity. If you can't get your nutrients (Roundup Ready they call GMO crops because they produce Roundup n get sprayed 2X before harvest. Need for nutrients = hunger.

  62. Is the chick in the blue dress being paid by Big Pharma?

  63. why have guests on if you're going to constantly talk over them and interrupt? why not set and run your yap and mezmorize your audience (all 3 of them, mom, dad & your deaf granny) with your brilliane.

  64. Too bad Poppy Bush Senior isn't alive to see this!

  65. Great, there goes J and J off to China. Good luck suing them then no one will get a dime anyway. I wonder how many families will be reimbursed for overdose funeral costs for their kids. Sue Ford, they market a product that kills more people than drugs or how about Anieser Busch? More laws and lawsuits aren't helping anyone, wake up. If you ever get into a lawsuit trust me, the only people that win are the lawyers.

  66. I don't like the idea of suing the manufacturers for people abusing and misusing their products. Just like I don't like when the left goes after firearm manufactures and tries to sue them out of existence every time one is used in a crime. It deflects personal responsibility and attempts to place blame on tools, technology, or anything in the universe except the individual and their failure to control themselves or their vices. We are already doomed if we can't even be trusted or expected to control ourselves in the face of ever-increasing access and technology.

  67. So what's wrong with going after McDonalds and Coca-Cola? It's not like they're doing the public service by serving junk and cancer. That lady is just talking nonsense.

  68. Wait a minute. These were not illegal drugs. They were "FDA approved" medications dispensed by "prescription". If anyone is at fault its the doctors who prescribed them, the street dealers who illicitly sold them or the users who abused them, not J&J. Americans never seem to want to take responsibility for their own screwups.

  69. This is soo F….UP! The FDA should be hold accountable as well! They are the one that approved it!!!!!

  70. These guys put El Chapo to shame. The only difference between these pharmaceutical companies and El Chapo is the use of violence.

  71. I'm personally affected by this crisis how can I collect what is do? How many people have to withdraw from hamburgers and fries?

  72. Slap on the wrist but this is just one state multiply this by 50 and add random class actions then it get big fast.

  73. The UN was in SLC (America) yesterday. Not Good. Lawlessness is nation wide hurting lots of American people behind the scenes taking away their rights, no doubt on the biggest scale ever. I know of 3 personally for the last 6 YEARS. Of course the Fake News won't report any part of that, the job is to suppress all the rights violations from the people, while taking down the country from within. Just like the news back then did report that would be done, right after the 911, 18 YEARS ago. The Whole World saw it. Proving that very attack never ended and is STILL ongoing,

  74. How $572 million for $17 billion lawsuit?
What about the balance amount? Silent settlement deal🤗.

If the lawsuit is genuine then why settled for $572,000,000?

What HHS doing for opioid misuse? What assurance HHS gives removing drug sexing?

  75. Car fentanyl from China are responsible for 95 percent of overdoses. Not doctor perscribed overdoses

  76. I really hope this is the beginning of MANY LAWSUITS to come. Drug companies only care about profits at the expense of American lives. Money talks and I hope these lawsuits make them more responsible

  77. Good luck getting getting actual pain relievers for your chronic pain! Let’s blame the medicine instead of the idiots that abuse it! Good idea!

  78. How CAN you say we did nothing wrong? People have written books about family member dying due to …These medications are very very destructive, I hope you will know how destructive it is. DO NOT SAY WE DID NOTHING WRONG? it sounds sataNiC.

  79. I side with J&J on this one. People need to take responsibility for their own abuse of medication. I was prescribed opioid medicine, I followed the instructions, stopped taking it when pain was gone and no problem

  80. This judgement needs to be overturned. There is no law broken here. If you want social change start holding people accountable for their own behavior.

  81. This "Doctor" is very ignorant

  82. WOW! first, you should know there is not only behaviour that causes people to go thru extreme suffering. there are many aspects, one of those is, I heard, addiction. the other one is unable to get rid of the med. due to unable to do it. the doctors are unable too. Western Health care system. There are also books written about how horribly hard they struggle to escape from these kinds of issues. There is not only opioid problem, but also an extreme way of doing the treatment in all field of health. As an example, you take an X-ray and the doctor sees what is wrong on the X-ray, but during the surgery they , by mistake, they do on the wrong side of the body. What I mean by this is we need to improve by not only listening to what the science says. Even if we want to go through science, we need to improve it. It needs lots of improvement.

  83. The problem is corn syrup .corn. syrup.corn syrup maufcaturesers

  84. Millions of people live in chronic pain, and they are legitimate patients who need legal, responsibly prescribed pain medication in order to function as normal human beings. Without their medication, they can do little more than sit in a chair or lie in a bed, due to injuries, arthritis, bone conditions, nerve damage and other neuro-skeletal conditions. They are NOT drug addicts !! They are the legitimate patients under responsible doctor's care. BUT THIS HYSTERIA ABOUT OPIOID DEATHS OF DRUG ADDICTS HAS POISONED THE MINDS

OF EVERYONE, INCLUDING MEDIA, GOVERNMENT AND THE MEDICAL PROFESSION. THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LEGITIMATE PATIENTS WHO NEED MEDICINE TO FUNCTION, AND IRRESPONSIBLE ADDICTS WHO TAKE OPIOIDS JUST TO GET HIGH. WE NEED TO LEARN THE DIFFERENCE, BECAUSE SOMEDAY YOU TOO WILL BE OLD WITH ARTHRITIS AND OTHER CHRONIC PAIN AILMENTS, AND YOU WILL ALSO NEED THESE MEDICINES JUST TO BE ABLE TO WALK, DO HOUSEHOLD CHORES, GO TO THE MARKET, AND LIVE A NORMAL LIFE. ADDICTS NEED REHABILITATION NOT DRUGS. PATIENTS WHO ENDURE CHRONIC PAIN NEED MEDICINE. THIS IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE.

  85. An Obama ahole, of course !

  86. Duh…If there's actually a doctor that doesn't know opioid =opium product and is addictive when taken unnecessarly–that doctor should lose his license. And if drug salesman is a nuisance, he doesn't have to see him/her.
Only opioid products work for severe pain. Put a red label on it that says OPIUM PRODUCT.
AMA now has us required to pay $250 a month or more to see a specialist every month for certain chronic conditions just to get a script. Now genuine sufferers can't get time-released meds and must suffer the swing of effectiveness. The amount of meds given to drug stores each month is limited and sometimes unavailable. Those of us with genuine severe pain are sometimes undermedicated with big obstacles. Being sick and disabled on a drug where driving isn't recommended–but you must go out of town to a specialist every month and find a drug store every month on precise days. God forbid you get the flu or can't find a ride.
Government is always making laws because individuals are irresponsible. Everyone pays in higher insurance costs for unnecessary rules and regulations.
Arrest the drug smugglers. Arrest the dealers. Arrest the users.
Blame the parents who let their kids get access to their meds. Blame the neighbor who doesn't call the police about drugs dealt on the corner or in a complex.
Blame the education system if any American is so stupid as not to know that opium in all its forms is dangerous and addictive.
    Stop making it sound complicated.

  87. Why give any government money? Bad idea.

  88. The "individual" customer should determine how much medicine is enough.
Terrible that there are people who are not responsible enough to even take care of themselves

  89. Now! We're gonna give local street drug dealers to make thier sales instead of corporations

  90. That doctor was negligent. That is why he is so adamant to blame J & J…. to exonerate himself! Addicts themselves are to blame! It would be stupid to blame Seagrams or Budwiser for alcoholism!

  91. Hell no why is it McDonald fault if people love to eat? Back off socialists loving nanny states!

  92. Another crazy ruling by the US judicial system, given that J&J's opioids only account for one percent of total opioid prescriptions in Oklahoma !! J&J are simply an easy target to blame for endemic US drug abuse, and as with banning gun ownership, it isn't going to make the slightest difference to the criminals. When did you hear of a junkie who read the health warnings on their stolen supply of pain killers ?

  93. Okay getting to this court case in the money that involves here is my conclusion you are not going to be able to bleed out Johnson & Johnson because if you do it will come down in the future such a narrow basis of getting medications especially for people who are very vulnerable don't have a lot of Education and basically don't have a whole lot of money. Yes I see what went on and I know that somebody should get some money but the money should be distributed not a huge massive amount but over time. Because Johnson & Johnson did a wrongful thing probably indirectly not directly probably pressured by people that they've had to deal with two but we should never people on the line for someone else's dollar bill all pharmaceutical meds only a study and have been for centuries including the Old Testament personally Unfortunately today man creates more diseases that bombards people and they have to take medications better only studies that people put out

  94. Today's lawsuit should have been a TRILLION dollars lawsuit. These pharmaceutical companies corporate board members should be responsible to testing their medicines rather than the end user. Test your brakes, NOT my money…
POLITICIANS: You're the alternate USER…. Especially your children/s.

  95. I was addicted for 7 years, where’s my money? (Joking, I blame only myself)

  96. How about sue the psychiatric pharmaceutical companies for false advertising, pseudoscience, severe adverse effects, severe withdrawal symptoms as well as permanent brain and nervous system damage.

  97. This is HORRIBLE! If a company is operating within the law like Johnson and Johnson was, they should definitely not be liable in court. This is the beginning of all kinds of lawsuits against…….your freedom. Next, they will go after big mac's, plastic straws, Budweiser, and Hershey's. We will all slowly be forced to eat tofu and dream of the good old days. Your ability to choose what you want will slowly diminish over time from here on out. That reminds me, has anyone noticed all of the concrete barriers they put up in the middle of the roads lately? My right to make a left turn when there isn't any oncoming traffic…..is also apparently diminishing.

  98. Good job scumbag lawyers, now the cartels can take over the opioids distribution. Ya, I can eat nothing but lard until I die, should I sue the company that supplies it? No, stop taking drugs losers.
