How to Navigate the First Book Marketplace: Advanced Search

Let’s explore the advanced search
function of the First Book Marketplace. In this video, you’ll learn how to find
the advanced search function of the First Book Marketplace and how to search
for books based on reading level. Reminder: in order to make a purchase or
download resources from the First Book Marketplace, you must first log in as a
registered member of the First Book community of educators, however, you can
explore the First Book Marketplace without logging in. You’ll see our global
search bar at the top right hand side of the First Book Marketplace website. This
tool provides a broad search of the entire First Book Marketplace. If, however,
you’re looking for a specific book by ISBN or for title suggestions based on
reading level, you’ll want to use our advanced search tool. To access the
advanced search tool, scroll down to the very bottom of the First Book Marketplace website. Click the advanced search link. You’ll be taken to a page
with more search options so you can make a narrower query. You can search by the
title of the book, the author, its ISBN number, subject, age groups or reading
level. There are two ways to search for reading level on the First Book Marketplace. One is by looking for the Lexile measure. If you know the Lexile
measure of the child or children you’re finding titles for, type it in this box
here. Make sure you add the prefix and suffix to your query as searching for
only a number will return different results. You can also search by guided reading
level or GRL. If you know the GRL of the title you’re searching for or of the
reader you’re searching for titles for, choose it from the scrolling list. If
you’re looking for books at different guided reading levels, select multiple
search queries at once. Simply hit the shift button on your keyboard and click
the cluster of levels that you’re searching for. Pressing the ctrl key and
clicking the mouse will let you choose multiple selections that are not
positioned next to each other on the scrolling list. If you’re using a Mac
computer, hit the command key and then click. If you still can’t seem to find
what you’re looking for and you want to modify an advanced search, it’s a best
practice to click the modify search link at the top of the search results. This
will route you to a page with your search terms from your last query
already populated. Do not push the browser’s back button–this will redirect
you to a new blank advanced search page and you’ll have to start your query
again from scratch. If you’re searching in this way, it’s a good rule of thumb to
confirm that titles reading level in the more information tab on that individual
products page. Keep in mind: the more fields you input in the advanced search,
the narrower your search will be. So if your query returns with no results, try
broadening your search by deleting one or two search terms and searching again.
