Honour Awards: Mark Trevorrow (Arts and Entertainment Award 2018)

Hi, my name is Mark Trevorrow and in 2018 I received the honor for Arts and Entertainment… very proud. I fell in love
with performing when I was about five or six years old when I used to lip-sync
to our 78 records. Mum gave us a gramophone, so my character ‘Bob Downe’ is very much me as a five or six year old believe it or not, so it all goes right
back to my childhood. It’s amazing to think it’s more than three decades, I would never have dreamed at that time that the character would
have anything like the longevity he’s had over the years. I’ve had a lot of
younger gay comedians tell me that I am an inspiration to them and I find that
very heartwarming and touching. I’ve also had the most wonderful experience of
being at a shopping centre or something and a mum will come up with a teenager
who’s obviously a young gay teenager, and tell me that I’ve helped make it okay for that kid to be gay. I think the thing that has
made me enjoy being Bob the most over 30 years is that there’s no other job that
you could possibly have where you make a living singing your favourite old pop
and show and rock and roll tunes. When I won that award I was away working and I was out at sea on a comedy cruise. It was very moving
and very touching it was lovely to see and hear the reaction from the audience. – So on behalf of me and my husband Stefan Elliot, who did not direct ‘Priscilla’, and
my stepchildren Oscar and Heidi, I just like to say thank you so much,
have a great night we’d love to be there with you but and we’re on a Greek island.
Ciao, kids! To be recognised by your peers is great but by your gay and
lesbian peers is even greater. My message to other budding young performers and
comedians out there is you’ve got to go to any gig that’s available, hit the open
mics, do as many gigs as you can possibly do because the only way to get
good is to do regular gigs and you’ll have terrible time for the first couple
of years but then you’ll come through that.
