Dealing with Abuse_Part 2, Self-Abuse_Themes from “A Course in Miracles”

last week we talked about abuse and how have of course an hour every teacher would have us respond to abuse the abuse of others today we wanted to talk about self abuse and how one deals with that now in a sense we’re really talking about both self abuse and abuse because they’re opposite sides of the same coin no one would ever seek to abuse anyone else if they had not first felt guilty of self abuse and the ultimate self abuse of course is that we choose the teacher of abuse namely the ego all right so the the ultimate self abuse is the belief in the reality of sin all right that I abuse God by separating from him and now I deserve to be punished for it so when we talk about self abuse we’re talking about masochism when we talk about consistently placing ourselves in situations where we will be hurt and be unfairly treated when we when we are always fighting ourselves sabotaging relationships that are meaningful to us sabotaging our own physical health or mental health when we find ourselves compulsively dealing with with addictions all right all this are different forms of self abuse there are different ways of punishing ourselves and so this must be their first this must be in place before we then abuse others because abusing others is always a projection of self abuse just as whenever we attack others or make judgments of others these are always projections of our self attack or self judgment and so abuse is just another form of this when we use the term abuse or generally talk about something that that’s a more severe form of attack or severe form of judgment so we really need to to relook at our self abuse and again we don’t look any further than than the original ego thought of having accused ourselves of abusing God and then believing we deserve to be abused or punished as an attribute in for what we have done and again this is always the basis of our abuse of others so what do we do when we become aware of this self abuse when we become aware of our compulsive behavior or obsessive thinking that we know is very self limiting and self damaging and so sabotaging what we do when we find ourselves hopelessly addicted whatever the form of the addiction knowing that these these addictions hurt us they heard us physically they heard a psychologically they hurt us spiritually what do we do when we find ourselves in the throes of this what we do is what we do with everything we don’t try to change it we don’t try to fix it what we do is we try to change the teacher the ego te ego being a teacher that has led us into the form of abuse self abuse and addiction telling us this is what will save us there’s one passage earlier in the text where Jesus says that not only have we deserve God’s function as being the Creator we have also user God’s function and being the Punisher that’s what sicknesses basically sickness which would be a form of self-abuse is the way of saying to God before you punish me I’ll do it in other words I know how very busy you are and you have a lot on your mind so you don’t have to worry about punishing little old me I will punish me so it’s a way of circumventing the wrath of God by saying I will take upon myself the role of being the punitive agent so again not only do you serve God’s role as being the Creator we also use orb the role that we have given him as being the punitive agents who will punish us for our sins so then we take that over we not only serve God’s role we also use serve the role we gave them so that’s what abuse is it’s a way of saying I will punish myself for my sin I will atone for my sin and my guilt and undo my guilt through suffering and sacrifice and abuse so it’s another way of saying I am I am NOT as God created me I am NOT a creation of love who have created me as itself I am rather a miss creation of my ego I am the the miss creative effect of my guilt and that’s what we seek to prove every time we abuse ourselves every time we see ourselves treating us unfairly not that other people treat us unfairly so much but that we treat ourselves unfairly this is what all forms of compulsivity obsessional thinking and addiction is all about this is what it means when we sabotage how we are at work again when we sabotage relationships when we sabotage our bodies there’s a there’s a method behind this egos method madness there’s a purpose there and that purpose is to prove that we deserve to be punished we deserve to suffer because of how terrible we have acted how terrible or terrible creatures we are because of what we ultimately did against God so ever we feel guilty for having unfair unkind thoughts about another person we will pay the price because these unkind thoughts about another person which we feel are justified because we feel that they have heard us these are simply fragmentary shadows of the original unkind thought we had about God and then we then feel God will have about us and so once we have unkind thoughts once we have attacking thoughts we must pay the price guilt always demands punishment and as impossible to avoid feeling guilty if one has had an unkind thoughts about someone unloving thoughts the judgmental thoughts about someone there is no escaping the egos exacting of this price of us and so the way we pay for our sins of being unkind is to suffer and we suffer at our own hands that’s what self abuse is about so the way out of this miserable invisible mess is to realize it all comes from just one basic mistake we chose the wrong teacher that’s why one of the core principles of the practice of A Course in Miracles is developing this relationship with one’s own inner teacher the Holy Spirit or Jesus or any other symbol you want to give to that internal non ego all loving presence in your mind that’s the way out of all self abuse and when you choose the teacher of love and forgiveness instead of the teacher of abuse he will help you realize that what you are doing is simply silly he will help you recognize the purpose behind this and then realize you could make another choice in other words the way out of self abuse because one of the things behind all experiences of addiction is that we are powerless and that there’s nothing we can do against this this is this terrible curser of addiction compulsivity self-sabotage and that’s a lie we have all power you know Jesus tells us in the course based on the scriptural statement we have all power and heaven and earth all power in heaven earth is given unto us because it’s in our mind to choose between heaven and hell so when we choose a different teacher he he restores to our awareness the power to choose against the addictions and compulsions that’s how we eventually become free free even without that there is no hope so we move from the form to the content front from the form of the addiction and the abuse to the underlying content of purpose then we change our purpose and we change our teacher everything then then changes for us and then peace is restored to our minds and then through words that peace exist and the braces ever
