AMD Borrows Intel’s Business Plan – Ryzen 2 Review

AMD Borrows Intel’s Business Plan – Ryzen 2 Review

Over the last five years, it seems like pretty much everyone has, uh, let’s say noticed Intel’s consumer
division’s “tick, tick, tick, tick, eventually talk” approach to generational performance improvements, including folks at AMD. But then, on the surface, AMD seems to have pulled a page right out of Intel’s playbook with their “second-generation” AMD Ryzen desktop processors. But is there more to these than meets the eye Well, I’m gonna let you know after this painful
segue to our sponsor Private Internet Access. Private Internet Access is the VPN Service that encrypts
all of your internet traffic and uses a safe protected IP. It’s got tons of other useful features, and you can check it out at the link below. So what’s the deal here? Is AMD replacing Ryzen 3, Ryzen 5, and Ryzen 7 with Ryzen 2? Mmm, not quite. While these are “second generation,” The Ryzen 7 2700 X and the Ryzen 5 2600 X clocking in at eight and six course respectively are not technically as n – That’s not going to come until later so what we’re getting now are higher boost clocks with XF are applying to all cores and this one’s pretty exciting up to a 34 percent improvement to cache latency with AMD claiming a theoretical three percent performance bump from that second point alone We’re also getting up to dual-channel ddr4 2933 support on the brand-new x4 70 chipset motherboards Which from even our early testing translates into much better compatibility with high-speed memory kits So all of this adds up to something that AMD is calling Zen + based on a tweaked 12 nanometer process that’s been fine-tuned to push rated clock speeds higher Without increasing the rated power consumption. Now of course, we’re gonna have to test all these claims so while we wait for this to Rise It’s a yeast joke Let’s go over our test setup We’ll be using both Intel’s latest and AMD’s previous gen consumer processors which, uh It’s done already Go ahead and cut oh my god This joke is so – I’m sorry that whole thing with the oven was just a lead-in to a joke about… mmm delicious Ryzen crust; why don’t we just get into the benchmarks? starting with our gaming stuff And Yes more terrible puns How surp-Ryzen (surprising) Ryzen Second-gen is ever so slightly faster than Ryzen first-gen Deus Ex mankind divided barely cared, Far Cry 5 actually got five to seven more fps and CS:GO Actually, this one was a standout. Very nice. The differences, though, are less noticeable in 3d mark and Unigine superposition putting second gen close enough that we technically observed higher numbers on our first-gen chip And of course when it comes to gaming intel still steals the show. Nowm let’s move on to productivity here things take a more dramatic swing So our 2700X absolutely creams the last gen 1800X in our testing With significantly higher scores in Cinebench and Asus RealBench and shaving a cool 1 minute 11 seconds off the classroom render time in blender the 1800X already beat out the core i7 8700K and most of these so the gap then is that much wider this time around impressive, and it looks like at least some of this is due to the improvements to cache latency with our testing a knight of 64 showing a pretty significant improvement of around 25% with higher bandwidth and improved memory latency to boot Of course What would a review of a new CPU be without? Overclocking results, let’s go to level 3 bad so our 2600 X Still didn’t want to play a ball with our pre-release firmware, but our 2,700 X with the auto tweak feature gave us predictably better results Although these games are mainly limited to highly threaded workloads Lightly threaded or gaming workloads understandably actually suffer slightly compared to the 100 megahertz faster stock XF our clocks Power consumption is still higher than coffee lake, but that’s not really a surprise What is interesting is that under load our new chips are more? Power-hungry we think because precision boosts to is keeping the CPU at higher speeds more often This also translates into higher temperatures, which means we wouldn’t really recommend Doing a ton of overclocking with your stock cooler as cool as the new wraith max RGB coolers might be so then at 329$ for the high-end verizon 720 700 x And 229 for the six-core Ryzen 520 600 X both of them $30 more than their non x counterparts AMD has managed to claw back a bit of the bang for the buck proposition that they enjoyed with rise ins first generation release and perhaps more importantly even though this is a new CPU And chipset the obvious stability issues with high-speed memory in particular That prevented us from making a clear recommendation last time around argon So let’s not kid ourselves. This is every bit as incremental as Intel’s move from skylake to KB Lake And we are disappointed that it’s not Zen to yet, but Second generation Ryzen is a bit more worth your money than last time which is a good thing You know what else is a good thing Mass drop the concept is pretty simple to understand the more people who commit to purchasing a certain product the lower the price of that product goes and today We’re talking about the AKG K 7 xx configured by mass drop these are open backed headphones with large Cushy ear cups that have been tweaked to deliver a wide Locationally specific soundstage that puts you closer to the source They feature a genuine leather headband memory foam ear pads with velu are covering a two-year warranty service by AKG And they ship out in two to three days so check them out at the link below Thanks for watching guys if you disliked you can hit that button But if you liked the video hit like get subscribed maybe consider checking out where to buy the stuff we featured at the links in the video description Also down. 1. CORRECTION: At 6:03 the table incorrectly shows the Ryzen 7 2700 as 8c/8t – This should read 8c/16t. Sorry! </Canada>

… And at 1:18, the 2600X is supposed to be 95W rather than 65W

  2. Need a straight answer, who's faster in multitasking now .. Intel core or amd ryzen?

  3. only linus has pc parts equivalent of a whole pc laying in his kitchen cabinets

  4. I have a Ryzen First Generation and I'm happy with, there's no point to upgrade. The prices went down a lot and it's crazy cheap now. If I ihad to buy a new PC I would still buy first generation just because the price.

However the evolution is nice. All will depend on the price. I think Ryzen first generation has the best price/performance right now, but if the price gap between generations decrease next generation will be a great deal.

  5. that grunt at 1:53 tho xD

  6. Here’s the thing. The 2700x is $10 more than the 1800x on Newegg. I’m okay with paying a tiny amount of money for a slight improvement in performance and a 4.0 GHZ boost clock with the stock cooler.

  7. why tf was there a condom ad here? I literaly just deleted my browser and search history on youtube and i don't watch anything related to it, BUT WHY???!!

  8. BEST VPN is to having NO ISP at all. Mean no Internet = No worry about Privecy 🙂

  9. I thought i7 8700k is in the oven 😀

  10. Its not tick tock linus..its what we call as a refresh duhh

  11. Do not drop it!

  12. Well I feel vindicated in the 2700x I just purchased for photoscan/photogrammetry tonight.

  13. Bruuuh just upgraded to ryzen a few weeks ago and now they got better ones…

  14. Screen recipient bat nucngl stick undermine intent term dramatically double file diet

  15. Better ryzen 7 2700x or i7 8700k for video editing (after effects, premiere pro, davinci resolve)?

  16. i am looking to buying a new gaming desktop which is better for me to go amd or intel i want best performance

  17. I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to pc building but I only have one question. Is that CPU cooler that comes with it removeable?

  18. This is the overclock generstion my jigga

  19. Personally I don't know why people sound almost disappointed in this revision of Ryzen. The architecture has more to give, so I'm pleased they're refreshing allowing the design to mature getting the most out of it. I'm sure Zen 2 when it comes will be another belter of a architecture.

  20. I just bought an Asus ROG Strix B350-f mobo and want to go with a Ryzen 7 2700x. The Asus website says this board can use the R7 2700x, but I have seen people saying that I will need to get an old AM4 chip to update the bios to run the 2700x, is this correct? Could I update the BIOS without a CPU in? Sorry, I am new to building pc's and am terrified that I wasted money now. PLEASE HELP

  21. so which one is better i7 or ryzen 7 2700x?

  22. Money from Intel can really make you talk nonsense!

  23. Don't buy it guys wait for the Zen on 7nm (2019). Prefer the Ghz and single core perfomance over cores.

  24. Is 2700x better than my 7700k ?

  25. Blame it on the Game Developers… And it's 3D Engine Softwares how they functionally work.. Most of the Game Developers use Intel Processors to make Games… Which means most of their tests are definite done in Intel – Arithmetic Logic Sequence Programming…. If you try to get the insider information how game company develop games, go ahead and take peak behind their rooms.. Ask what engines have they been using… Which is basically total biase… Or they don't have the budget to make more tests on other hardwares… Or they are still using the old build structure from AMD…. Which is not that good….

  26. can you run an sli setup with this CPU?

  27. keeps a computer in his bread cabinet…….lol

  28. Ryzen 2600X is supposed to be 95 W TDP , or am wrong

  29. Hold on, I need to know why you have a computer where your spice rack should be

  30. It’s interesting to me that the obvious AMD fan base excuses AMDs fairly minor increase in performance when it is an architecture that has nothing but room to improve. But on the other hand it wasn’t okay for Intel to take the same incremental steps forward as previously seen. Despite the fact that Intels architecture is more mature and finding improvements is more difficult. Is it really ok that the increase for 2nd gen is small just because AMD said it would be? Don’t miss understand me I am a Ryzen and Intel system owner and I like Ryzen and it’s shove to the industry which gave us more cores at a price we never could have expected a few years ago. The excuses are real though. I am curious for zen 2 and 8 core Intel. If only we can get these memory prices down though eh?

  31. Is the template for these graphs already partially filled out and then you have to go in and change the info yourself or do they come blank and you build them because whichever is the case the latter will more than likely help with those errors that come up in a lot of videos

  32. Everytime linus drops something take a shot.

  33. Was really hoping that someone accidentally turned on the oven… Disappointed.

  34. your puns are great

  35. Why are you recording in your house lol

  36. 1:52 Linus Drop Tips

  37. Linus, stop with the dad jokes, it's scaring the kids
But real talk, thanks for the insight as usual 🙂

  38. Intel got to comfortable and didn't respect AMD. It's hard to be innovative when you've been number 1 in the market for so long. When you've always been consistently behind, you'll always work harder and think of new ideas to try and surpass the No.1. AMD have done just that. The next few years will be very interesting, I wonder what intel is coming up with to rival against AMD's 7nm next year.

  39. "ahhhhhhh. its a yeast joke"

  40. A direct comparison between the two business plans is not justified when what AMD wants is to capture more of the market that Intel has already got. To do that they needed to put out a chip that could win ground against Intel in performance. Now with the Ryzen 7 2700x they have that. Plus, they did that without having to move to another socket (which they are committed to for 4 years). Intel has been reconfiguring architecture and require new socket. So, apples and oranges.

  41. The way Linus handles components makes me cringe

  42. my girlfriend doesn't like 'yeast jokes'…know I know why 🙂

  43. When do you think the Zen 2 APU's will release? I'm a college student and I'm just about about to build a Zen 2 APU build, preferably the 3400g if the nomenclature continues. I just want to be able to play GTA V in 1080p.

  44. I really like Linus, watching his YouTube channel every day and few days ago when I bought parts for my new rig I did exactly opposite of his reviews. For someone who needs good gaming/Photoshop setup he is too AMD-ey. And, in my case, he is wrong. But I stil like him very much.

  45. How about test more games if you wanna know anything at all about improved gaming performance.

  46. who the hell actually uses the mentioned sponsors at the start of the video XD

  47. 1:53 what sort of noise was that lol

  48. I also keep computers in my kitchen cabinets

  49. my Ryzen 5 2600X hit 1446 in cinebench r15 and hits consistently above 1420 all the time

  50. Plsss intel pls fix your caching setup plzzzzz

  51. im going to upgrade to a r7 1700 because on pc part picker it's for £169.99

  52. You even said it yourself…I don't understand how you've forgotten just a bit further in the video. 2nd gen isn't coming until next year. This is just a refresh. Not the same thing.

  53. What horseshit. What do expect any cpu producer to do. A new ground up every time? Of course they will tick tock in between majors. Nothing to see. Move on.

  54. I got a 2600 because it was cheaper

  55. Do not buy ryzen processor. I just bought ryzen 3 1300x (for the first time i buy an AMD product) after 2 days of usage processor just broken. i go to the store but they replace the processor after 1 week of usage processor died again. just do not buy AMD for low price product my intel i3 was way better thn this shit.

  56. Should I upgrade from ryzen 5 1600 that's only 4 months old ?

  57. Woah. I like the purpose of the cabinets and ovens. I wish i have those cabinets to lol

  58. when your puns are so bad they make you cut and redesign the setting and flow of your video…..This is what we call, "trolling yourself".

  59. i swear at this point hes droping things on purpose

  60. I know what is more than meets the eye- TRANSFORMERS>

  61. *Launches ZEN++*

don't worry i know that the zen lineup is just
    ZEN-ZEN+-ZEN 2-ZEN 3
this is just a joke ya know.

  62. The intel's 9th generation will be named SickLake

  63. 0:25 – Taken a page from Intel's book? More like Intel's NUC amirite

  64. let luke do amd stuff in the future this cuntish biased view annoys me

  65. just upgraded from my amd a8 6600k. worth the wait.

  66. _/,,/ yes! thanks man!

  67. What's "find tuned?"

  68. I think I'll be waiting for Zen2… Expecting much bang for the buck.

  69. Hey Linus,

Is there any chance you can do a video testing older GPUs with the X470 chipset and Ryzen 2nd gen? I have an Asus GTX 780 and I've heard people say that the 780 in particular doesn't work with Ryzen gen 2 for some reason.

  70. When will ryzen drop the 2820x

  71. I always think if there could be a CPU or motherboard that I could plug in one of these 2700x and another much lower power consumption of CPU like maybe ARM. So when I don't play games or not CPU intensive tasks, it switches to ARM to save energy and then when it requires heavy CPU, it switches to 2700x. I mean it doesn't have to be ARM because it uses different architecture but would be nice if there is such thing. And I don't mind the OS is telling me that there is a 2 seconds switch.

  72. This video gets funnier with age.
    AMD – "Here's Ryzen 2 12nm. It's better than last years 14nm!"
Intel – "Here we have the best gaming processor ever made! This one is 14nm ++++++++"

  73. "Aaand while we wait on this to ryyyze"
    You're a legend, Linus xD

  74. a 2600 is 150$ right now doe

  75. intel paid reviewer starts with gaming benchmark…where amd never tells their cpu is for gaming…its an all rounder budget cpu…lol this guy becoming ass whole slowly..no wonder gamernexus didnt give any attention to this idiot these days

  76. Gotta love Linus for dropping everything, the GPU and RAM…….

  77. Intel be like 14nm++++++++++

  78. I believe there's a clear difference though. Intel claimed to go by this Tic Toc System and then wasn't able to give the improvements promised so they axed that idea. AMD never made that claim, but I can see where people may get the idea of AMD is using Intel's upgrade plan. As long as they don't make a claim like Intel did I won't hold that against them because I don't believe there are any guaranties in life. No claims, no broken promises.

  79. Anyone here after Ryzen 3000 leaks

  80. ryzen 2 = 7 nm releasing sometime 2019

2nd generation zen 12 nm are the processors out as of 2018.. yes its confusing but I understand.

personally im still on the 14 nm ryzen 3 1300x and won't be upgrading until the 7nm ryzen 2 comes out.

  81. The second gen's major thing was a reduction in price. Ryzen 7 1800X was $500, while Ryzen 7 2700X is $330 when released.

  82. linus you may be a genius but you're definitely a goof

  83. AMD has Ryzen To the occasion.

  84. Casually has pc components in "the kitchen"

  85. Im still lost
    Intel core i5 – 8600k
    Or
    Ryzen 5 2600x??
    Please help

  86. I gasped when I heard the ryzen box fall

  87. 1:52 old habits die hard?

  88. I switched over to the dark side. I got my first AMD chip, the 2600X

  89. Can I run Ryzen 3 1200 on Asus x470?

  90. casually pulls test bench out of cupboard

  91. Mr. Intel is going to let us know. Oh brother, this won't be biased.

  92. lol butter fingers strikes again 😉

  93. I think for AMD the super high end desktop may be a break even tier. Where AMD clobbers both Intel and Nvidia, is in the low end and mid tier markets, My Cousin, who has every computer certification under the sun. Told my the price of parts go up on a curve and the all of sudden spike. He told me to buy the parts just before the spike, you what have a high end computer but you will get the best bank for your buck. For me in September after Ryzen 1st gen came out was the 1600 and a RX 470 4GBthe RX 470 4GB was double the SP and Memory of the R7 265. I gave my brother to use, my FX-6350 and that R7 265. The sad thing is, accounting to CPU.bechmarks.com. The Ryzen 2200g is 36% across the board better than the FX-6350.

  94. Do you need an x470 motherboard to get the best out of the 2700x or can you get the same results from a good b450?

  95. Amd really needs to stop doing this crap. $100 more for the 590 compared with the 580 and i will get 4fps more? Retarded. I should of just got the 2060.
