Amazon Marketplace – Day One: Stories of Entrepreneurship | Ofer Azrielant, Jewelry.com

When I was 18, I went to England to study at the London Film School, where teachers included Alfred Hitchcock. Hitchcock taught us movie history. The thing that impressed me is that he was the funniest
man I’ve ever heard speaking. And when I came back to Israel, I started directing documentaries. My first documentary
was received very well, and the second one that I made wasn’t popular with people in charge of the National Television. That’s when we decided we
will go make money in jewelry and then we’ll go back
to the movie business. By the time we made money in jewelry, we said, “Hey, that’s a lot of fun!” When I came here to this country, I went to a company called Finley and I offered my product. From the moment Finley took the product, and then Macy’s came in, and then May Company, and other companies, I became the king of department stores as far as it came to fine jewelry. We built the company to $250
million before we sold it. My name is Ofer Azrielant. I am the President of Jewelry.com. In 2000, I took a trip to California. I was busy acquiring a
jewelry manufacturing company. Somebody calls me and they say, “You want to buy a URL?” And I said, “What’s a URL?” That’s how much I knew
about the internet in 2000. It took me some time to
figure out what to do with it. One of the things we are doing right now is participating in Amazon Exclusives. The opportunity to use detail pages, the opportunity to enjoy the
marketing push of the program, all this makes it worthwhile. I’m a great believer of
traveling the untraveled road. People use the word differentiation when they write business plans, but they really don’t
always think it through. For me, there was a neglected
middle of the market in jewelry when I came
to the United States, and I was going to knock
100 times on the right doors to try to make exactly that happen. I took my storytelling passion, and put it into creating
ideas that relate to jewelry, and left the movies for Steven Spielberg.
