The Mews

UPSTAIRS AND DOWNSTAIRS

The mews are small streets in some of London’s most exclusive areas. The mew houses  were built to accommodate the aristocracy’s horses and servants. The stable was on the ground floor and the hay and servants were on the first floor. There were often an underground tunnel that connected the mew houses to the mansions. That way the servants didn’t disturb the residents when they saddled up the horses. There are no windows at the back of the mew houses, because the ladies and lords didn’t want to give curious servants an opportunity to see something they were not supposed to see.
